KURA announces closure of Jamhuri Road for sewer, drainage construction at Talanta Sports City

The agency explained that the works are crucial to address long-standing drainage problems that have frequently caused flooding around Jamuhuri and Ngong Road, disrupting business activities and damaging nearby infrastructure.

Traffic along Jamhuri Road will be temporarily halted this weekend to make way for the construction of major drainage and sewer lines linked to the ongoing Talanta Sports City Project.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) said the road closure is necessary to allow completion of essential works that form part of the wider infrastructure upgrade in the area.

In a notice released by KURA Director General Silas Kinoti, the agency announced that the road will remain closed from 8 pm on Friday, October 10, to 11 pm on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

“The closure will facilitate construction of essential drainage and sewer infrastructure as part of the Talanta Sports City Project,” said the Authority.

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes during the two-day closure to avoid delays.

“Motorists are advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive as alternative routes,” KURA said, assuring road users that traffic marshals will be deployed along the affected sections to guide movement and reduce congestion.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their cooperation as we implement these critical upgrades,” the Authority added, noting that proper signage will be placed to direct motorists throughout the period.

The agency explained that the works are crucial to address long-standing drainage problems that have frequently caused flooding around Jamhuri and Ngong Road, disrupting business activities and damaging nearby infrastructure.

Once completed, the new drainage and sewer system will connect to the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) network, improving water flow and waste disposal across the Ngong Road–Dagoretti–Kibera corridor.

According to KURA, the upgrades are part of a broader initiative under the Talanta Hela programme, which aims to enhance Nairobi’s sports, road, and utility infrastructure.

The programme, led by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, was launched in 2023 to support the growth of sports and creative talent by developing modern facilities and digital platforms for talent management.

At the heart of this plan is the Talanta Sports City, a major sports and entertainment complex being built next to the Nairobi Showground.

The facility will feature a 60,000-seat stadium designed exclusively for football and rugby, with additional pitches for athletics and training. It is being constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure quality and timely delivery.

Besides the main stadium, the complex will include modern amenities such as VIP lounges, medical and doping control rooms, broadcast facilities, and advanced floodlighting for evening matches. Completion of the project is expected in December 2025.

Sustainability has also been integrated into the project’s design, with features such as solar power generation, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient LED lighting to minimise environmental impact and reduce operating costs.

For further updates, KURA advised residents and motorists to visit its official website or contact the Corporate Communications Department.
